dc.description.abstractThe relevance of this study is determined by the need to find a satisfactory adaptation strategy for situational contexts and to deepen the understanding of the vocabulary use in the daily lives of different nations. Insufficient research into the specifics of audiovisual translation as such and the urgent need to adapt the materials of foreign TV series for our compatriots and provides novelty. The aim of the work is to theoretically substantiate and experimentally test the regularities of the use of adaptation strategies during audiovisual translation. The object of our research is lexical items that are subject to adaptation strategies during translation, used in replicas of the series "Fleabag". The subject of the research is the adaptive strategies methods in the English-Ukrainian audio-visual translation process. Research methods such as analysis, synthesis and generalization of scientific literature, descriptive method, classifications and interpretations, quantitative analysis were used to solve the tasks. The theoretical significance of the work lies in the generalization of scientific approaches to the problem of translation of phraseological units; systematization of approaches to the classification of translation transformations. The practical significance of the study is determined by the fact that its main provisions and results can be applied in the courses "Translation Theory", "Introduction to Translation Studies" and practical classes in translation studies. The paper consists of 108 pages including an introduction, three parts, references and appendices. The first part analyzes the basic concepts and features of audiovisual translation, the definition of issues. The second part is devoted to the study of adaptation strategies, their role in translation, as well as in audiovisual translation of lexical items, which are the main object of study in this work. The third practical part analyzes the use and translation of examples of vocabulary subjected to a particular strategy use; and the analysis of the adequacy of the selected equivalents. The appendices contain tables with examples and their classification, as well as a complete result diagram. Research materials include two episodes of the British series “Fleabag”, its official script and the Ukrainian voice-over translation. To perform translation analysis in the practical part of the work, three categories of vocabulary which potentially have cultural and social significance for native speakers were identified. Among these categories are proper names and two subspecies of stylistically reduced vocabulary: vulgarities and slang. Examining the use of translation strategies of proper names, we can conclude that the dominant strategy was foreignization (84%) with the main method of transcription (53%), used to translate most names and names of companies and brands. Domestication in this category has become a secondary strategy (16%). Based on the results of the analysis of the translation of proper names, it is fair to say that this category is most often transmitted by means of foreignization in order to achieve the adequacy of the sound of the translated text in the context of the product. Quantitative results of the vulgarities study, according to which the use of techniques of forensic strategy is only 14%, confirm the high level of taboo for this category of words. The widespread use of the strategy of domestication (86%) practically confirms that vulgarisms belong to the layer of vocabulary that characterizes the cultural and social features of the language. The widespread use of connotative transposition techniques (62%) and the search for situational equivalents (16%) proves the existence of cultural differences and a wide synonymous choice of Ukrainian equivalents, generally disseminated. In the analysis of the translation of slang lexical units, which included phrasal verbs, idioms, expressions to denote people, adjectives and cultural references, the dominant strategy was domestication, which accounted for 97% of the total number of examples in this category. The most common method of translation was the use of connotative transposition (64%). Foreignization in this category occupies a small percentage (3%). Summarizing the analysis of the culturally significant layer of vocabulary and its English-Ukrainian voice-over translation, we can conclude that translators, adapting the product, often use the strategy of domestication (77%). Despite the possible loss of the original meaning, the widespread use of this strategy as a result gave us an accessible, understandable and culturally adapted to the Ukrainian audience audio-visual product. The strategy of foreignization (23%) is generally productive when translating proper names with the dominant methods of transcription and transliteration.uk_UA
