Відтворення засобів індивідуального стилю автора та способи їх передачі з англійської мови українською (на матеріалі творів Ерін Морґенштерн)

Abstract

Робота присвячена відтворенню засобів індивідуального стилю автора та способам їх передачі з англійської мови українською (на матеріалі творів Ерін Морґенштерн). Актуальність дослідження зумовлена необхідністю глибоко проаналізувати унікальний стиль письменниці, особливо в аспекті його відтворення, оскільки фактично відсутні комплексні дослідження, присвячені саме перекладу її прози українською з урахуванням усіх мовних рівнів. Мета роботи – виявити засоби індивідуального стилю Ерін Морґенштерн та проаналізувати специфіку їх відтворення українською мовою. Об’єктом дослідження є засоби, що формують індивідуальний стиль Ерін Морґенштерн, а предметом – способи їх передачі українською мовою в перекладах романів. Матеріалом для дослідження слугують англомовні тексти романів Ерін Морґенштерн «The Night Circus» та «The Starless Sea» та їхні українські переклади, виконані Єленою Даскал. The study examines the verbalising of the means of the author’s individual style and the methods of their translation from English into Ukrainian, drawing on Erin Morgenstern’s novels The Night Circus and The Starless Sea. The study aims to identify the multilevel linguistic devices that shape the author’s individual style, to describe their functions in the original texts, and to analyse the strategies used by the translator to reproduce these features in Ukrainian. The study integrates contemporary theoretical perspectives on linguistic individuality and the mechanisms through which it is manifested in literary discourse. The theoretical part of the study outlines modern approaches to defining the author’s individual style, emphasising its systemic, dynamic and culturally conditioned nature. The study differentiates between the concepts of author’s individual style, idiostyle and idiolect, demonstrating that the first two notions function as near-equivalents, while the idiolect represents a broader, non-literary type of linguistic individuality. The study also systematises multilevel linguistic devices at the phonetic, lexical, stylistic and syntactic levels and summarises key translation methods based on classifications by V. Karaban, A. Mamrak, O. Volchenko, N. Ababilova and H. Kuzenko. In the practical part of the study 255 units in The Night Circus and 282 units in The Starless Sea were identified. The findings confirm that in both novels the stylistic level is dominant (74.90% and 66.31% respectively), demonstrating that Morgenstern’s author’s individual style is grounded in dense imagery and symbolism. In The Night Circus, epithets, metaphors, similes and personifications shape the perception of the circus world, while phonetic devices reinforce acoustic effects. In The Starless Sea, stylistic devices are complemented by a higher frequency of syntactic and phonetic means, which together build a mythopoetic rhythm. The comparative analysis within the study reveals substantial differences in translation strategies across the two novels. On the lexical level, close equivalents dominate in The Starless Sea, whereas The Night Circus demonstrates a balanced use of close equivalents and phraseological analogues. On the phonetic level, the overall rate of non-reproduced devices remains significant, yet The Starless Sea shows more successful equivalents due to the prevalence of onomatopoeia. The stylistic level presents the most pronounced contrast. Loan translation rises from 33.51% in The Night Circus to 56.68% in The Starless Sea, reflecting an increased effort to preserve symbolic structures. The syntactic analysis highlights a shift from structural precision in the first novel to reduction strategies, primarily omission, in the second. The study concludes that Erin Morgenstern’s author’s individual style is verbalised through a multilayered system of phonetic, lexical, stylistic and syntactic means, and its translation requires a flexible combination of transformation methods responsive to the symbolic and aesthetic nature of each text.
