Особливості субтитрування як виду кіноперекладу ( на матеріалі американського телесеріалу " The morning show " )

Abstract

The relevance of the research is determined by the lack of systematic theoretical and practical substantiation of subtitles in domestic translation studies as one of the key concepts of audiovisual translation. The object of the study is the original script of the series “The Morning Show” and the Ukrainian subtitles created by the studio “Tsikava Ideia”. The subject of the study is the analysis of translation tools in the translation during the process of subtitling of the series “The Morning Show”. The material of the research is the original script and the Ukrainian subtitles of the series “The Morning Show” (1 season, 10 episodes of 45 minutes each), created by Ukrainian studio “Tsikava Ideia”, by translator Olena Tsekhmeistruk. The aim of the research is to determine the translation tools and the translation specifics of the series “The Morning Show”. The research methods such as comparative linguistic and translation analysis of original and target subtitles were applied, which revealed the peculiarities of verbalization of certain meanings specific to each language. Contextual, component and transformational analyzes are also were used in the study. Quantitative analysis was applied to confirm the objectivity of the obtained results. The theoretical significance is based on the fact that the results of our study can be used in the development and improvement of theoretical materials on audiovisual translation, including subtitling. Practical meaning is determined by the data obtained as a result of the study that can be used in the course of lectures on teaching translation theory, audiovisual translation, as well as for writing term papers and dissertations on the research topic. The paper consists of 103 pages including an introduction, three parts, references and appendices. The first part analyzes the basic concepts and features of subtitling. The second part is devoted to the study of compression and transformations while profanity preservation and their role in subtitling. The third practical part analyzes the use of compression and translation of profanity vocabulary during subtitling; and the analysis of the adequacy of the analyzed subtitles. The appendices contain tables with examples and their classification. It is important to follow compression strategy when subtitling, as compression is an effective way to simplify the source text during subtitling. Analyzing the subtitles of “The Morning Show”, we found 46.5% of grammatical substitutions, 44% of omission and 9.5% of integration. The most frequent cases of compression were the removal of possessive pronouns (20.5%), the replacement of a subordinate clause with a phrase (15%) and differences in the designation of real opportunity and passivity / activity in Ukrainian and English (13%). The least frequent cases of compression are: replacement of adjective-pronoun phrase (1%) and removal of the formal adverb “one” (1%). Compression as a phenomenon in the subtitling process is effective for achieving adequate translation and compliance with space-time requirements. The translation of idiomatic and cultural elements is important during subtitling, so we considered ways to translate profanity. When reproducing profanity, the choice of transformation depends on the context in which the unit of profanity is used. The stylistic analysis shows that compensation was used most often (37.6%), word-for-word and loan translation was used in 24.7% of cases, euphemism in 18.8%. Among the less common transformations are: omission (7%), grammatical substitution (5.8%), generalization (2.3%) and concretization (2.3%). When analyzing the subtitles of the series “The Morning Show”, we came to the conclusion that most of the technical requirements and rules are preserved, although there are some violations. Based on the results obtained, we can say that the subtitles for the 1st season of the series “The Morning Show” is a quality product, and their translation is adequate. However, there are some nuances that may interfere with the comfortable perception of the analyzed subtitles. Given the problems of subtitle translation, further development and research of subtitling issues for the Ukrainian audience is needed.
