Abstract: | The translation of dystopian novels belongs to the artistic translation, and it requires a considerate accuracy. It also demands using of stylistic devices that can convey the exact meaning of the source text into the target text. The purpose of the thesis is to analyze the reproduction of genre and stylistic specificities of the dystopian novels in translation in the novels by James Dashner “The Maze Runner” and Patrick Ness “The Knife of Never Letting Go”. The translation strategies for reproduction of genre and stylistic specificities of the dystopian novels have been defined. It has been also determined that one of the basic features in dystopian novels is occasionalisms; they play an emotional and expressive role in novels. Three main groups of such words were identified that contain genre and stylistic features of dystopian novels: quasi-realities, quasi-onyms, and slang quasi-words. The translation transformations that were used during the process of translation of these groups were analyzed separately in two novels, then the general conclusion was made. It has been found out that both Ukrainian translators use the following translation techniques while reproduction of genre and stylistic specificities: quasi-onyms: transcoding – 54%, equivalence – 9%, transposition – 8%, literal translation – 9%, modulation – 8%, calque (loan translation) – 6%, adaptation – 6%; quasi-realities: adaptation – 38%, literal translation – 36%, calque (loan translation) – 9%, transcoding – 9%, modulation – 8%; slang words: adaptation – 45%, modulation – 26%, equivalence – 19%, literal translation – 10%. The general conclusion was made that the Ukrainian translators mainly preserve genre and stylistic specificities of dystopian novels in their translations. |
